The Company of Vergers

Kingston Parish Church from the South West The Company of Vergers is a body of people which exists to keep the church open as much as possible every week. Its aim is to be available to members of the general public who visit the church, to engage in conversation, to answer questions (for example on the church's history, or perhaps on the Millennium appeal) and to render any practical help.

It is also the duty of Vergers to deal appropriately with any misuse or unauthorised use of the church building, and to ensure that the building is at all times kept tidy and pleasant for the visiting public.

Vergers operate on a rota basis, with most vergers taking one or possibly two duties (of one or two hours at a time) a month. Some vergers prefer to operate in pairs, although most do solo duties.

The Company of Vergers is always on the lookout for new recruits, and currently there are quite a few vacant duties. If you are interested in volunteering, do get in touch with one of the Churchwardens, who will be very happy to give you further details!
